Nathanial entered his home, expecting to find Beatrice at work in the kitchen. Or to see her in the living room, muttering to herself as she sewed. Instead the house was cold, from her absence and from the lack of any heat coming from the stove or the fireplace. Moving to the stove, he held out a palm to it and knew instinctively it hadn’t been stoked since she’d cooked dinner in it last night. Walking to the large fireplace, he saw the fire had long burned out and rubbed at the back of his neck.

Where was she?

Taking the stairs two at a time, he was soon outside her door. “Bee?” he called out. When he heard no noise from her room, he poked his head in and froze.

She was gone.

The room looked as pristine and as lifeless as before she had arrived. The only difference was the closet held a few more clothes. Had she taken anything with her?

He spun on his heels, pausing, as a wave of remorse and shame overwhelmed him. Where would she go? It was nearly winter, and she’d left with nothing.

He raced from his house, ignoring the ruined supper they never ate, still on the counter, and ran to the sawmill. He found Karl there, working on the books. “Karl, I have to go to town.”

Karl raised an eyebrow. “Why?”

“I … lost Beatrice.”

“You lost your wife?” He frowned. “How?”

“I was an idiot and listened to gossip.” He saw Karl’s eyes darken with understanding and remorse, as he nodded. “I have to find her. To …” He shrugged. “To beg her to give me another chance.”

Karl rose and walked toward him, his expression grave. “Don’t expect it to be easy. But, if it’s easy, it won’t be nearly as sweet when she forgives you.” He clapped him on his arm and then pushed him toward the door. “Go!”

Nathanial nodded and raced to saddle a horse. He only hoped Beatrice was well. If someone had harmed her … He pushed that thought away, as he focused on his horse and the short trip to town.

En route, the sun burst through the clouds, pushing away the threat of snow and gifting them with a beautiful late-autumn day. Although still chilly, it wasn’t wintery yet, and he was thankful for that. He hoped Beatrice arrived to town without suffering a terrible chill.

When he arrived, he didn’t know what to do or where to go. He left his horse at the livery where Bears had been taciturn and unwilling to say much, which was unlike him. Nathanial stood outside, staring up and down the town’s main street, hoping he’d catch sight of his wife.

When he’d been unsuccessful after nearly ten minutes, he decided to walk in the direction of the bakery, pausing when he heard giggling and what he thought was Beatrice’s voice. Turning in the direction of an open field behind a row of houses, he came to an abrupt stop, when he saw Beatrice running and laughing.
